You Find An Appliance Leaking. What Next?

1/4/2021 (Permalink)

Recently, SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton responded to a home that suffered extensive water damage as a result of a dishwasher leaking.  The homeowner didn’t know what steps to take to stem the flow. The damage could have been minimized if they had taken a few simple steps before we arrived to do the bulk of the cleanup.  Here are a few steps that you can take to make your life a little easier in the wake of an event like this.

  1. Turn off the water

Quickly identify the source of the leak, and shut that water line.  This step is critical for stopping costly damage.

  1. Unplug electronics

As unfortunate as water damage is, it doesn’t compare to your personal safety.  Avoid the risk of electrocution by unplugging any electronics in the vicinity of the leak.

  1. Contact the experts

Time is of the essence.  You should make two calls; one to your plumber, and the other to a certified professional restoration company.  The plumber will fix the leak, so no further damage occurs.  The restoration company will dry the area and cleanup any other resulting damage.

  1. Take photos

While you are waiting for the plumber and remediation company to arrive, document the damage.  Having photos of the damage and its source will make the claims process go smoother and quicker.

If you have water damage that results from an appliance leak, call SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton at 203.324.1642. We offer remediation services at any time, and pride ourselves on our response time in the face of emergencies.
