Practice Fireplace Safety in 2022

1/7/2022 (Permalink)

Colder temperatures are finally upon Fairfield County.  Many homeowners will be starting fires in their fireplaces, some even for the first time of the season.  Fireplaces are a time-tested and steady way to provide heat for your home.  When properly maintained, fireplaces are a relatively safe source of home heat.  But they can quickly become a hazard if not monitored well.

Use these tips to keep you and your family safe if you are using your fireplace:

  • Have your chimney cleaned prior to use, especially if you haven't used your fireplace in a while.
  • Use a screen in front of the fireplace if possible
  • If you do not have a screen, monitor the fireplace regularly for embers or debris that could be expelled from the fire
  • Have water nearby to extinguish even a small fire if need be
  • Keep children and pets a safe distance from the fireplace

It is important to contact a fire damage restoration professional as soon as the flames are extinguished to help limit and remediate the damage. SERVPRO of Norwalk/Wilton has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had fire damage to their property.  If you have any type of fire or smoke damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.
